About me
I’m Nakalya Johnson, an American-Caribbean graphic designer with a BFA in Graphic Design and a minor in Marketing from Rutgers University–Newark. Born and raised in Montclair, New Jersey, I’ve learned that resilience shapes how I approach challenges, allowing me to turn obstacles into opportunities for self discovery. Growing up with my identical twin sister has strongly influenced both my personal outlook and my visual practice. Being a twin has shaped my understanding of duality, connection, and individuality concepts that are central to my logo and overall design work. My work is inspired by everyday life, including my friends and media influences, while my motivation is rooted in my family and my commitment to future success. Recurring themes in my practice include sustainability, representation, and imagination. With an affirming perspective, I transform uncertainty into motivation. Graphic design is my medium of choice, as it allows me to express my passion for inventiveness while creating meaningful, impactful work. Overall, I’m committed to pushing the boundaries of design while staying grounded in the values of resilience, representation, and imagination.
